What is crypto anarchism?
Cryptoanarchism is an ideology dedicated to the use of cryptography to preserve freedom of expression and prevent government control and regulation of the internet. The increasing sophistication of cryptographic methods enables people to communicate over the Internet in a way that is anonymous, undetectable, and tamper-proof.
This movement is often associated with cypherpunks who view privacy as a good thing and wish there was more of it. Governments tend to protest against completely anonymous interactions on the Internet because they can be used by drug traffickers, tax evaders and those who pose a threat to national security.
Bitcoin, an emerging digital currency that can be traded and used anonymously, is a type of technology that is heavily endorsed by crypto anarchists. Some people just want to buy things - whether illegal or not - without the risk of being identified. Others see the exemption from government control as a form of exemption from a traditional financial system that they see as unfair or potentially unreliable.
Some of the technologies that enable a movement towards crypto anarchism are:
- high speed networks
- Integrated services digital networks (ISDN)
- Tamper evident boxes
- smart cards
- Ku-band transmitters
- Multi-MIPS personal computer
- encryption chips
