What is carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the environmental impact of an organization, an event, a person or a product. It measures the total greenhouse gas emissions of a given activity or group of activities to provide a measure of the extent to which those activities produce harmful emissions and thus contribute to global warming.

It is estimated that computers cause up to 3 percent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. As a result, carbon footprint has become an important measure in the computer industry.

The concept of the carbon footprint arises from the discussion of the ecological footprint. The total amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by various sources is generally expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide emitted. The footprint refers to the total emissions of carbon dioxide produced by various human activities over a period of time, usually one year.

Sobald ein CO2-Fußabdruck berechnet wurde, können Anstrengungen unternommen werden, die Treibhausgasemissionen zu reduzieren. Diese können ein besseres Prozess- und Produktmanagement, technologische Entwicklungen, Kohlenstoffabscheidung und Strategien zur Verbrauchsveränderung umfassen. Darüber hinaus können Projekte wie Solar- und Windenergie oder Wiederaufforstung zur Reduzierung von Treibhausgasen durchgeführt werden. Cloud computing wird auch als ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung Greener Computing betrachtet.
