What is spoof website / fake website?
A fake website is a website that uses dishonest designs to mislead users into believing they are another innocent party. Spoof websites often mimic the websites of banks and other official corporations or government agencies, often to fraudulently gather sensitive financial or personal information from users.
This term can refer to a website that is a parody or satire, although this usage is less common.
Spoof websites are commonly seen as a form of phishing, in which IT structures are hacked or set up in order to steal data. In general, a fake website uses logos, heavy-hitting text and visuals, or other means to imitate the style of a legitimate company or group. Often, users enter financial or other data and trust that it will be sent to the right place.
Hackers can use very sophisticated methods to deceive end users. Methods like URL cloaking or domain forwarding can hide some of the biggest clues that a website may not legitimize. Experts recommend that users only access financial and other sensitive websites from a main page or other verified street to avoid being scammed by a fake website.
