Project management und -kontrolle ist ein Teilaufgabe des Projektmanagements. Es werden darunter alle Maßnahmen verstanden, die dazu dienen, den tatsächlichen Projektverlauf mit der ursprünglichen Planung in Einklang zu bringen. Der Projektleiter muss agieren und nicht reagieren. Er ist gefordert, das Projekt aktiv zu beeinflussen und damit zu steuern. Hierbei erhält er entscheidungsunterstützende Informationen durch das Projekt-Controlling.
Je mehr Zeit der Projektleiter bei der Projektsteuerung darauf verwendet, notwendige Maßnahmen zu treffen und gemeinsam mit seinem Project team umzusetzen, desto höher ist die Qualität der einzelnen Steuerungsmaßnahmen und desto mehr Möglichkeiten gibt es, auf Abweichungen zu reagieren. Ziel des Projekt-Controlling muss es deshalb sein, ein Frühwarnsystem aufzubauen, das dem Projektleiter möglichst bald und möglichst deutlich aufzeigt, wann eine Reaktion auf Planabweichungen notwendig ist (Frühwarnsysteme im Projekt-Controlling).

Project control should be carried out continuously during the project so that deviations from the plan can be identified at an early stage and countermeasures can be initiated. In addition, the project control should also be carried out at the end of the project. The aim here is to determine whether the target areas described have been implemented in an acceptable manner. The purpose of this final control is to gain knowledge that is an important part of the planning of future projects and that will increase planning accuracy in the future (project controlling in the project follow-up phase).

The planning activities with regard to the mentioned variables, which are supposed to offer an optimal project execution, only prove to be sensible if the values are constantly monitored. Planning, monitoring and control must be coordinated accordingly, in the sense that associated actual values can also be determined for the planned variables. This data is compared in the course of the control, any deviations that occur are analyzed and control measures are developed based on them. The control includes the ongoing examination and comparison of the project parameters. Ultimately, the goal is to check whether planning goals are being met, exceeded or fallen short of.
The project management and control is divided into the following sub-areas:

⦁ project deadline management and control,
⦁ project resource management and control,
⦁ Project cost management and control and
⦁ Project financial management and control.

In project controlling, it makes sense to carry out a target / expected comparison (or target / actual comparison or target / forecast comparison) in addition to the traditional target / actual comparison, due to the overall project assessment. Here, the expected values periodically determined at the respective milestones are compared with the originally planned values of the overall project. In this context, topicality should be given priority over absolute accuracy, so that countermeasures can be initiated early enough.
