Product development as an internal service

Product development as an internal service - Internal services are generated by one company area as a production factor for other company areas. Customers of an internal service are therefore dependent company areas. With the interpretation of product development as an internal service, the early consideration of the cost, quality and time requirements of the company areas is required, which will be involved in the creation and utilization of the planned product, i.e. production, procurement, logistics, etc.

This is done at a price that customers are willing to pay and at a cost that is compatible with the product's planned contribution to success. The orientation of product development to the requirements of production is discussed in the literature under the heading "Design for Manufacturing (DFM)". The DFM extends the interpretation of product development as an internal service by aligning the planned product with the requirements of all areas of the company that are involved in the implementation of the product design.
