What is Least Significant Bit?
In computing, the least significant bit is the rightmost bit that contains the smallest value in a multi-bit binary number. Since binary numbers are widely used in computer science and other related fields, the least significant bit has a meaning, especially when it comes to transmitting binary numbers.
Digital data is calculated in binary format and, similar to numeric notation, the right digit is considered the lowest digit while the leftmost digit is considered the highest digit. Because of position notation, the least significant bit is also known as the rightmost bit. It is the opposite of the most significant bit that carries the highest value in a multi-bit binary number as well as the number furthest to the right. In a multi-bit binary number, the significance of a bit decreases as it approaches the least significant bit. Since it is binary, the most significant bit can be either 1 or 0.
When binary data transmission is performed with the least significant bit using the first technique, the least significant bit is the one that is transmitted first, followed by other bits of increasing significance. The least significant bit is often used in hash functions, checksums, and pseudorandom number generators.
