What is Lean Software Development?
Lean software development is a software development philosophy that aims to streamline the production of applications and software products and make them more efficient. The philosophy is popularly attributed to the book of the same name by Mary and Tom Peppendieck. It has also evolved based on shared lean manufacturing strategies across physical industries implemented by Toyota Project Systems.
Various goals apply in lean software development, including:

- Reinforce learning
- Deliver as early and as quickly as possible
- Empower people
- Assess the integrity of the project
- Take a full look at the project
Many of these general goals are expressed in specific efforts. For example, eliminating waste can take many forms, from creating smarter development modules to finding new ways to write code. In general, the development of lean software has joined forces with another philosophy called 'agile software development', which regulates the collaboration between programmers and designers and provides helpful guidelines and frameworks for software development as a whole.
