Kanban (Japanese: sign or card) is a retrieval system based on the pick-up principle for materials from upstream production stages. Originally, the Kanban card attached to the goods transport carrier was used to exchange information and thus control the flow of goods in the direction of the upstream production points.

By providing information about the goods requirements of the downstream point to the upstream points, intermediate stocks were minimized. Today, the information in the Kanban system is no longer transmitted with cards, but with EDP.
