Environmental impact assessment

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an instrument of environmental precautionary policy. Its purpose is to ensure that before decisions about public and private projects are made, their environmental impacts are examined at an early stage and given appropriate consideration.

The results of the environmental impact assessment must be taken into account when making a decision on the approval of a project. The Environmental Impact Assessment Act (UVPG) has been in force since 1990. It is based on the directive of the Council of the EC from June 1985.
