EDIFACT is the acronym for Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport. This set of rules, defined and maintained by the bodies of the United Nations (UN), serves to standardize the electronic exchange of commercial documents and business messages. Due to the patronage of the UN, EDIFACT is often referred to as UN / EDIFACT.
EDIFACT is based on the ISO 9735 standard. EDIFACT comprises a set of rules, directories and guidelines for the electronic exchange of structured data between independent computer systems, especially in the areas of trade and services.
Due to the general accessibility and the well-defined structures of the messages and content, the exchange of information in the EDIFACT standard across different computer systems is easier than when using uncoordinated data formats.
