Dog tax

The municipalities are entitled to the tax revenue from the dog tax. It is part of the local taxes and is intended to help limit the number of dogs. The legal basis of the tax are the state dog tax laws or corn munal tax laws. The dog owner is liable to tax, although keeping guide dogs, service dogs and dogs for forest and hunting purposes is tax-exempt. In 2003 the revenue from dog tax amounted to around € 218 million. It is one of the minor taxes.
