What is Computer Vision?
Computer vision is a field of computer science that aims for computers to see, identify and process images in the same way as human vision and then provide an appropriate output. It is like teaching human intelligence and instincts to a computer. In reality, however, it is a difficult task to enable computers to recognize images of various objects.
Computer vision is closely related to artificial intelligence as the computer has to interpret what it sees and then perform appropriate analysis or act accordingly.
The goal of computer vision is not only to see but also to process and provide useful results based on the observation. For example, a computer could generate a 3-D image from a 2-D image, such as in cars, and provide important data for the car and / or the driver. For example, cars could be equipped with a computer vision capable of identifying and distinguishing objects on and off the road, such as traffic lights, pedestrians, traffic signs, etc., and acting accordingly. The smart device could provide inputs to the driver or even stop the vehicle if a sudden obstacle occurs on the road.
If a person driving a car suddenly sees someone in the car's path, the driver has to react immediately. In a fraction of a second, human vision has performed a complex task: identifying the object, processing data and deciding what to do. The goal of Computer Vision is to enable computers to do the same kind of tasks as humans with the same efficiency.
