Central banks (also known under the terms central bank or central bank) are responsible for the monetary and currency policy of a currency area and are also called "currency watchdogs". There are central banks at both national and supranational levels.
Until 1997, the central bank for Germany was the Deutsche Bundesbank, based in Frankfurt am Main. The European Central Bank (ECB), which has been responsible for both the European Monetary Union and Germany since 1998, is also located there.
