What is automatic location identification?
Automatic Location Identification (ALI) is an improved electronic location system that automatically forwards a caller's address when they call an emergency service such as 911, regardless of whether they are calling from a cell phone or a landline. Telephone companies have subscriber databases that contain a consumer's phone number with a primary home address, but newer technology such as ALI makes it easier for emergency responders such as fire departments, law enforcement, and paramedics to locate the exact address of the caller more quickly. In fact, respondents can find someone to dial 911 even if they don't say a word.

Due to legislation and pressure from stakeholders such as first responders, ALI is required in many regions of the United States. This is because callers seeking emergency help may not be able to speak or not notice their address. For example, a young child may dial 911 on behalf of an unconscious caregiver who needs immediate medical attention. Other callers may not be able to remember an address during a traumatic event or may be forced to remain silent when hiding from an abuser.
